Spam Trends - September 2009

posted by Marc Chouinard in All about Spam on Sep 28, 2009

While examining our spam traffic over the last 4 weeks, I extracted the “new” content data.  We received the usual spam every week, but occasionally had noticeable outbreaks. I was curious and compiled the following numbers (note that the % value is a comparison to August):

1st week of September:

Quiet week, nothing really noticeable (other than the usual traffic)

2nd week of September:

Image spam increased by 160% compared to what was seen in August

3rd week of September:

Image spam was still 80% higher (though it dropped 80% from the previous week), and Chinese URL spam increased by 140%

4th week of September:

Adult Phishing (“I am 24 years old and looking for…”) went up by 100%, and Chinese URLs, though down since the previous week, were still 60% higher than August
